Associate of Applied Science Degree Program

Program Description
The Surgical Technology program provides the general education core, program specific courses, and the clinical practicum to prepare students for a career as a Certified Surgical Technologist.  Following the successful completion of the program, students are eligible to sit for the National Certifying Examination to become a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST).

The Surgical Technology program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs and the Accreditation Review Committee on Education in Surgical Technology.

Application Procedure
A student desiring to pursue the associate of applied science degree in Allied Health with concentration in Surgical Technology must:
1. Apply, meet the general admission requirements and be accepted by Northeast State Technical Community College.
2. Indicate Allied Health-Concentration: Surgical Technology as the desired major on the Northeast State application form.
3. See a faculty advisor from the Health-Related Professions area prior to registering for classes and obtain faculty approval to register.

Surgical Technology Program Admission Requirements
The Surgical Technology program has specific admission criteria, and admission to Northeast State does not guarantee admission to this program.  A student desiring admission into the Surgical Technology program must complete all required general education courses listed in the typical program of study with a grade of "C" or higher.  A student must have attained an overall 2.0 grade point average.  Biological science courses previously taken must have been completed within the last 10 years. A student desiring admission to the Surgical Technology program should contact the Health-Related Professions Division office at 423.323.0238.

Typical Job Opportunities
Certified Surgical Technologists may be employed in hospital operating rooms, delivery rooms, cast rooms, emergency departments, ambulatory care areas, physician offices, and central supply departments.  The surgical technologist works as a member of a surgical team in the operating room under medical supervision to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. Special emphasis is placed upon scrubbing and circulating during surgical procedures.
